SIGNS of a STRUGGLE is an exercise to
interpret works of classic 20th century literature into capsulated
pop audio performances. Similar in scope to Procul Harem's
Whiter Shade of Pale, Kate Bush's Wuthering Heights,
and Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit, Signs honors
the work of five great literary authors at mixing ethos and
struggle into hallmarks of their medium. The books represented in
this collection contain an eclectic mix of protagonists who's
journeys present "crises of character" that translate well to
modern circumstance.
Signs begs the highest
measure of modesty. No amount of artistic arrogance would claim to
paraphrase Ulysses' thousand plus pages of historical and
literary references, stretching from Homer to Yeats and the Bible
to the Kabala in a five minute pop song. Ditto for the spiritual
searching of Aldous Huxley, the 'darkness in the mirror' gift of
Franz Kafka, the groundbreaking erotic strength of Anais Nin, and
the quintessential existential self analysis of Albert Camus. Even outside academia, reading the classics is
great brain dancin'.
